Atypical Denim
Shoes design collaborate with ECCO LEATHER, 2018
Traditional boundaries within fashion are gradually disappearing, giving rise to unexpected transformations. This shift encourages diversity and a reinterpretation of materials, including leather. Leather has long been associated with certain classic and luxurious images, rooted in its historical usage. To make it more versatile, enjoyable, and sustainable, expanding its texture to embrace universality and diversity could redefine the typical perception of leather.
In Korean tradition, there is a timeless, folksy texture inspired by natural elements like grains and stone. This texture shares a similarity with denim, one of the most universal materials in fashion. Drawing inspiration from traditional methods of pattern-making based on natural forms, I reinterpreted these approaches and applied them to leather. This methodology creates a balance between the familiarity of a denim-like aesthetic and the unique, unexpected qualities inherent to leather as a material.
