Your Ground

Comfort tools for people with depression, 2021

“Your Ground” is a collection of relaxation tools designed for individuals experiencing depression. It includes a clock, a picture book, home slippers, and vests. During my own struggle with depression, severe lethargy prevented me from being productive. Even something as simple as looking at a clock filled me with immense pressure and guilt. Constantly watching time slip away while doing nothing made me feel trapped in a never-ending cycle of misery and helplessness, as if time itself had frozen.

In modern society, time is often valued solely in terms of productivity and efficiency. This mindset forces people to chase after an uncertain future while neglecting the present. The relentless pressure to maximize productivity consumes the present moment, depriving people of the opportunity to cherish and care for it. However, time exists not for a future that hasn’t arrived but for the present that is unfolding right now. To break free from the burden of creating a “valuable” reality, we must shift our perspective on time and focus on living fully in the moment.

The clock and the book serve as tools for fostering emotional empathy and stability. The clock is specifically designed for individuals who have lost their sense of time, helping them anchor themselves in the present moment. Instead of displaying exact numbers, the clock uses subtle movements to gently remind users that time is slowly and steadily passing. This design encourages individuals to recognize that their time is neither stagnant nor meaningless but continues to move in its own meaningful way.

The picture book “So, I Killed a Clock” narrates my experience with time during depression. It was created to empathize with and comfort those struggling with depression. Additionally, it offers insight for those unfamiliar with the condition, helping them understand the emotional struggles of people living with depression.

While the clock and book focus on mental grounding, the wearable collection emphasizes grounding the body. I designed home slippers and vests to provide direct sensory interaction. Physical contact can help stabilize mental states, but individuals with depression often avoid it due to heightened sensitivity to even small stimuli.

To address this, the daily wearables incorporate various physical stimulants. The home slippers feature three distinct types of stimuli that gently stimulate the soles of the feet, promoting better blood circulation and offering a calming sensory experience.

︎︎︎Vest
The vest is designed to promote relaxation by gently supporting and adjusting the user's posture in a comfortable way. Its one-size-fits-all structure adapts to different body types depending on how it is worn. Additionally, users can experiment with the vest’s design to discover the posture that feels most natural and comfortable for them.

By incorporating subtle and varied stimulations, the vest encourages users to become more aware of their body and physical condition. These wearable tools are specifically designed to help individuals reconnect with their physical selves and establish a sense of grounding.
